Historical Returns with NAV

Lots of Mutual Funds report returns using NAV and not price returns. Naturally, our advisors, follow everything M* poops out and we spend time explaining the difference.

you must mean ETFs right? Because for mutual funds "price" is the exact same thing as "nav"

Yes, I said Mutual fund because it was the first on his list. Thanks!

So then he wants ETF returns based on NAV?

Could be looking for gross instead of net of fees?

Just an update: Here is his response to the NPS survey we sent...

I am not sure how much value a one question survey is to your firm. I was expecting more.

I do not believe this question allowed me to full express why I responded the way I did. We have been attempting to increase our use of YCharts over the past year or so. To be honest, it has been a challenge. We see value in the product – both the web interface and the excel addin. However I am regularly finding data calculation issues in excel and differences in mutual fund return calculations that do not match your data provider Morningstar or the numbers that the mutual fund companies report themselves. You have countless return calculation methods – many of which are not used within the industry – or at least I have never seen them used. The numerous different calculations and time period formats have led to differences and regular fact checking efforts within our firm to verify YCharts reported numbers. We do not have to do this checking with other data providers.

Recently I also found economic data that was not being updated on Ycharts for several months. When I informed our rep about it, the data team reported back that a change in data reporting structures caused the feed to not update. But I have to ask – who is verifying these feeds within YCharts to ensure data accuracy and complete information. This is your business – and accurate and timely reporting is crucial.

I jested with our rep - inquiring when I would be receiving my commission check for acting as a data integrity consultant in finding so many calculation and data issues on your behalf. But seriously, we go to countless lengths inside our firm to make sure the information we are providing to clients is accurate. At this time, we have found no choice but to regularly second guess information that we receive out of our YCharts interfaces.
