default dashboard
I was watching a prospect set up their dashboard (using the blue button on dash when you first make an account...forget what it says, maybe "set up watchlists" or something). It prompts you to enter some stock tickers, then some fund tickers, then select some indexes and econ indicators to create 4 watchlists.
We did all 4, and he entered the tickers correctly with just spaces in between, but only the index and econ watchlists showed up on the dashboard. I had him hit "add watchlist to dashboard" to try and find the missing stock and fund watchlists, but they weren't saved anywhere. Not a hot first impression.
If we do fix this initial watchlists setup page...it might be cool if they are initially prompted with that by default when they log in, or if we could send that to them as a link that would be handy (this might be possible now?). That being said, I think it would be better to revamp the process slightly differently.
The whole way this process functions right now just seems like we are missing an opportunity to make a great first impression and make things easy for first time users, and instead just saying whatever...here you go, good luck. I'm sure there is an argument for the blank slate that I'm missing, but I don't see the point of empty dashboards.
It would be really cool if when people first started a trial, they were prompted with a sort of questionnaire - what kind of securities/data are you here looking for? etc etc, which then puts them into a pot for one of 4 or 5 default accounts. Stock, MF, ETF, econ, all of the above, etc. This would include defaults per pot - watchlists, as well as some relevant saved charts, screens, scores, and metric sets. Sure some people want to just figure this stuff out themselves, but so many people we talk to don't buy YCharts or dig in because they're overwhelmed, feel it doesn't fit them, don't know where to start, etc etc. We can help with that on phone calls, but a better first impression and base personalized default accounts seem like a great way to easily facilitate it.
